Meet WEK - Wearable Compliments

Meet Telma Oliveira. Architect flirting with jewellery.
Founder, owner and designer from Wek, a contemporary jewellery brand, based in Porto - Portugal.

Tell us a little about Wek.

Wek is a brand of contemporary jewelry that explores unconventional materials. Simple, colorful and dynamic, Wek is a fun brand, with items to use and abuse on a day-to-day basis!
The current collection combines tying string (traditionally used to tie vines) with fasteners designed and printed in 3D.

When and how did the idea of creating Wek emerged?

The desire to launch a new brand came after more than a year and a half working in the area of accessories, with the brand PIROPO, and several training courses in the area of jewelery (from contemporary jewelery in Engenho e Arte, to 3D modeling in Cindor). It was a very enriching period, in a work area that was different from my academic background, and that excited me more and more. At that time, it started to become meaningless work only with pieces of industrial production, and the desire to draw every detail of my work was growing.

What difficulties have you found?

Time changed the pace. Stop working alone, seek partners and manage the timings to make everything go right was tricky, it was important to know to wait. Establish the ideal partnership is another difficulty. Find professionals / companies to respond to the needs took some time (again the time!). The investment was also higher, which meant that it was more thought, objective and restrained.

What surprises have you found?

The difficulties eventually culminate in good surprises. I found very professional partners and in tune with me and my work, such as the 3iDea, responsible for the printing process of our pieces. Another good surprise was the connection with the store where Wek was launched and currently the only physical store, the Scar-store id, in the heart of the artistic city block of Porto. It was / it is very good to find people who, like me, believe in their ideas and in the creative potential of our country. It is this that Scar-id really represents, trusting in the emerging national talents in different areas of design (from fashion to equipment), and it is a pleasure to be part of their range of designers.

Where do you find inspiration to create?
My lifestyle, the way I see the day-to-day, has been my inspiration. The practical and simple, self-assured, independent women inspires me ... a women of dicreet presence but bold in the details, the details unveiled in a closer look. The appreciation of the material I work with, more than an inspiration is a characteristic, the desire to show its origins in a different context.

Wek succeeds because ...

Wek has little more than 1 month ... for now it's a success for all those involved in this process, that have resulted as planned! True success requires time and will be dictated by the public, which fortunately has shown great acceptance of Wek necklaces from the very first moment.

How the name Wek came to mind?

Despite the desire to create a new brand, I did not want to leave forgotten the brand wich I began my career in jewelery with, PIROPO. In addition to the tying string, which was reinterpreted in this first Wek collection, I also wanted to convey the concept of making a woman feel beautiful, confident, worthy of a good compliment (piropo). Wek, wearable compliments, was the result of that search to keep compliment/praise in the name of the brand, in this case "usable" compliments, "to wear".

What is your favorite piece?

It's hard to pick just one piece ... but right now I fell for gray with yellow clasp. The exclusive Black & White Collection Scar-id is also a temptation to a declared black lover!

What has changed or is changing in your life?

I am personally very pleased with the progress of my work, it is another step for a number of plans that I have in my mind everyday! To see a project attracting the public is also an incentive to bring other projects to life. Increases confidence and responsibility. The brand itself has come to an international audience, a big change, and one of the goals I set out to accomplish with this change.

What would you say to those who also have a project to move forward?

Take risks! In a prudent and planned way, take risks! A few years ago I could not imagine creating my own business. After some experience in the working world, I don't see myself working in another way. Some say that this crisis has forced us to find strength and alternatives to counteract, and in this battle creativity has been the winner. Not only the design itself, but also in the way we have created business opportunities in an unfavorable context. Again, the issue of time is important, things take time to work ... but there is no greater motivation than invest and work in a project of our own!

Thank you, Wek!

Apresento a Telma Oliveira. Arquitecta namorando a joalharia.

Qual é a tua peça favorita?

Aumenta a confiança e a responsabilidade.
